Educator Opportunities
At the Phoenix Zoo, teachers are very important. Explore this area to find professional development and other opportunities strictly for educators.

  • Educator Orientations (Minimum of 15 people/$0):  This is orientation is designed for pre-service teachers and current educators.  During this 1 ½ hour tour of Zoo grounds our education staff will introduce you to the Zoo’s “outdoor classroom”.  This orientation is intended to help best utilize the Zoo during field trips and provide you with inspiration for nature-based classroom curriculum.  When making your reservation, please let us know the grade-level/s you teach, so that we can customize your tour.  For more information or to schedule an orientation, please call Christina Klein- Ellis at 602-286-3859.  Please keep in mind that this tour is for adults only and children will not be permitted to attend.   
  • Ed-Zoocation Open House (May 16th,2009 from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m./Free for 1 educator and a guest):  The Phoenix Zoo would like to invite all Valley educators to our Ed-Zoocation Open House. The Education staff will be offering an interactive “sampling” of educational programs and activities.  Educators will get an opportunity to participate in inquiry-based career workshops, unique behind-the-scenes experiences, and guided tours of our Arizona Trail led by one of our educational specialists.  Additionally, our Zoo-to-You staff will be on hand providing educational, energetic, and engaging animal presentations.  If you are an early childhood educator, don’t forget to stop by Harmony Farm to check out our hands-on preschool activities and programs.  We look forward to meeting and spending the day with you!

           Admission is free for an educator and 1 guest.  You must pre-register for this event

    Fall 2009: K-4th Title 1 schools will be eligible for our new scholarship program “Zoo Scientists”.  During this two-part program, students will be visited in their classroom by one of our education specialists then apply what they learned during their visit to the zoo. Each session will be led by one of our educational specialists.  Stay tuned for more details!

    January 2010: Educator Professional Development Workshops- The Phoenix Zoo will host a multi-institutional professional development opportunity event for local teachers.  There will be a minimal fee associated with participation.  Please check the website again in Fall ’09 for more details!
