Help the Orangutans!

We are on our way to building a truly World Class Zoo for a World Class City. In November, we celebrated the opening of Land of the Dragons, the new Komodo Dragon Experience. Having opened to rave reviews, we feel strongly that it is one of the top Komodo dragon exhibits in the country, exemplifying our intent to create a World Class Zoo.

With the completion of Land of the Dragons, our attention is focused even more on our primary and most immediate concern – building a new home for our extraordinary family of Bornean orangutans. Duchess, Bess, Kasih and Michael represent three generations of one of the most endangered and noble primate species. Watching their interactions, especially since the arrival of baby Kasih is a favorite activity for guests visiting the zoo.

Their current home represented the finest in zoological architecture and design when it was built in the early 1970s, but it no longer meets the needs of our orangutans or our guests. We have completed plans for a spectacular new Bornean Orangutans Experience that will immediately become one of the best such exhibits in the entire world.

We simply must get this new home built for these remarkable and endangered animals. Of the $5 million required to make this dream a reality for Duchess and her family, we have already raised well over half and hope to have commitments for the remainder soon, in order to begin construction in 2010. We have the dedication and commitment to make this happen. Now we need help from people like YOU to supply the funding and support. We understand that times are tough for many in our community, but it is during these difficult times that aggressive and ambitious actions can truly make a difference.
