Job Title: Horticulture Volunteer
Department: Horticulture
Supervisor: Lenora Stewart
General Statement: Horticulture volunteers work side by side with the zoo's horticulturists helping to care for an extensive and diverse plant collection. We are looking for people who are willing to share their love, knowledge and appreciation for plants. Volunteers will be asked to perform most of the required tasks of the horticulture team including the installation and maintenance of landscape materials, irrigation systems, the use of power equipment and heavy labor.
Essential Duties:
All duties will be performed under the direction of a Zoo horticulturist and may include:
- General grounds maintenance including regular raking, mowing, trimming, pruning and watering.
- Basic maintenance of irrigation systems.
- Fertilization of plants and turf areas.
- Maintenance of lakes and waterways.
- Installation of plant and landscape materials.
- Public presentations about the horticulture collection.
Qualifications:
- Previous relevant experiences and/or relevant education or training in grounds maintenance or horticulture preferred.
- Knowledge/experience with local plant palette desirable.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain hand and power equipment.
- Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work for four hours in extreme temperatures and perform some physical labor.
- Able to commit to one four hour shift per week for at least one year.
