Proceeds benefit construction of a completely new
night house for our four Bornean orangutans. Your
contribution will support the much needed night
house expansion as well as enable us to continue
offering interactive educational programs to inspire
and promote human stewardship of the natural world
and all of its creatures.
Bornean orangutans have been a cornerstone of the
Zoo’s animal collection since its opening, when a
young female orangutan named Duchess made her
debut. Duchess is now a grandmother and matriarch
of a unique family that includes her daughter, Bess,
baby granddaughter, Kasih and Kasih’s father,
Michael. Their home at the Zoo was built in the
early 1970s. And while it was considered
state-of-the-art then, it has now aged and is not
capable of supporting our standards for animal care,
welfare and exhibition.
