The Phoenix Zoo runs effectively only because of the many teams working together every day towards our common mission.

Most departments in the Zoo don’t often get the opportunity to work closely with our beautiful animals. Ultimately, though, we are all here to make the Zoo function effectively for our guests and provide our animals with the best care possible.

Our Operations Team makes important contributions and works diligently behind the scenes to keep the Zoo moving forward and is often unnoticed by guests, but always appreciated by the rest of the Zoo staff. This team of 15 members consists of carpenters, electricians, welders, painters, HVAC specialists and creative general trade workers fix (literally) any and everything inside the Zoo.

They repair leaky animal’s autwaters so exhibits don’t flood, fix heaters to keep animals and staff warm, and repair all the fans/misters/coolers, etc. in our summer heat. Our Operations Team builds many items for us and the animals, including climbing structures, pools, sheds and behavioral enrichment items.

With a collection of over 3,000 animals inside 125 acres of gorgeous Phoenix land, the Operations Department is always busy. Remarkably, they receive about 20 work orders each day which does not include ongoing projects and preventive monthly/weekly maintenance!

The Equine Team wanted to thank our Operations Department for all their hard work this year. So they provided them with a custom team-building experience where they groomed, tacked and rode our horses. Staff that wasn’t comfortable riding enjoyed being with the horses and giving them a good grooming. Horses are very therapeutic and will always put a smile on your face, even if you are in a bad mood. (That’s why you’ll never see our Equine staff frowning!)

It is nice to take a break every once in a while and remember what we are all working for: inspiring and motivating others to care for the natural world.
