What is Arizona Gives Day?

Arizona Gives Day is an annual giving movement uniting non-profits like the Phoenix Zoo to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Arizona through online giving. The event helps raise awareness about the critical role Arizona nonprofits play in our communities and inspires people to give generously creating a thriving and stronger Arizona for all.

Why should I donate?

The Phoenix Zoo, part of the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation, is one of the largest non-profit zoological parks in the nation serving 1.4 million guests annually. The Zoo opened its gates more than 50 years ago and continues to be a treasured destination for locals, as well as guests from far and wide. Nestled on 125 acres of beautiful desert and lakes in Papago Park, the Zoo provides natural habitats for more than 3,000 animals, with more than 400 species represented including many endangered or threatened species from around the world. The Zoo is proud to provide educational programs to more than 160,000 children and adults each year and supports conservation efforts locally and internationally.

Where will your donation go?

This year we would like to focus our fundraising efforts on the building of our new meerkat habitat!

A group of meerkats (also known as a “mob”) will soon call the Phoenix Zoo home as part of The Pride Campaign. These highly social, small carnivores will be a wonderful addition to our Namibian Village on the renovated Africa Trail.

We hope you will “join the mob” on Arizona Gives Day and support our efforts to build a brand new habitat for these amazing and truly entertaining creatures.

We received a three-and-a-half-year-old male African lion, Boboo (pronounced Ba-boo), from the Columbus Zoo! Boboo arrived yesterday (March 10) and will spend time in an off-exhibit area to acclimate to his new surroundings. He was transported to his night house upon arrival and is doing well.

It is unsure of how our current 20-year-old female African lion, Cookie, will accept Boboo, so there will be a period of time where they will get to know each other behind the scenes to see if they would like to spend time together. They are not a breeding pair, so there is a chance that they will be rotated separately on view, or if they show signs that they will get along, they will be able to be seen together.

It will be at least 1 – 2 weeks before Boboo is on view for the public.
