presented by the Arthur L. and Elaine V. Johnson Foundation.

Painted Dog Research Trust (PDRT) is dedicated to the conservation of the highly endangered painted dog, also known as the African wild dog. This work has been ongoing for 25 years by PDRT founder Dr. Greg Rasmussen, thus making it one of the longest studies into the species in the world. PDRT is committed to supporting conservation into the future by meaningfully incorporating Zimbabwean graduate students to build local capacity and tomorrow’s conservationists.

Dr. Rasmussen is a wildlife conservation biologist who has been exclusively working with painted dogs since 1989. Born in London, Dr. Greg moved to Zimbabwe with his parents when he was 11 years old. He attended Falcon College in Zimbabwe and the University of Oxford in the UK, and also had a spell in the merchant navy before he began working with wildlife in Hwange National Park in the late 1980s. Dr. Greg established the Painted Dog Conservation Project in 2002 and the Painted Dog Research Trust in 2014. The Phoenix Zoo has proudly supported painted dog conservation efforts in Zimbabwe through our conservation grants program.
