Velociraptor mongoliensis
“Swift robber from Mongolia”
Velociraptor is well known for the large, retractable, sickle-shaped claws on the second toes of its hind feet, which it used to stab and grasp prey.
It’s also known for its proportionately large brain compared to other dinosaurs. This big brain likely supported strong senses of sight and smell and a fairly high level of intelligence, similar to a modern-day hawk or eagle.

Geologic time frame: Late Cretaceous, 75 – 71 million years ago
Diet: carnivore
Habitat: deserts, scrublands
