A Classroom Without Walls

For more than 30 years, Cindy Eckert-Timm and Damon Timm spent their days helping children discover the world around them. 

As sixth-grade teachers in Mesa Public Schools, they knew some of the most meaningful lessons happened outside the classroom. Year after year, they brought their students to the Phoenix Zoo, watching children light up as they experienced animals and nature in a way textbooks cannot provide. 

Many of their students had limited opportunities to explore places like the Zoo. Cindy and Damon saw firsthand how a visit could spark curiosity, create lasting memories and inspire a deeper appreciation for wildlife. 

When they retired in 2014, their connection to the Zoo remained. They continued visiting, enjoying the animals and reflecting on the impact the Zoo had made on generations of students. They also continued supporting the Zoo through their annual giving, helping provide care for animals and educational experiences for future visitors. 

Over time, Cindy and Damon began thinking about the legacy they hoped to leave behind. For them, including the Phoenix Zoo in their estate plans was a natural extension of a relationship they had already nurtured for many years. 

Just as they spent their careers helping young people grow, they wanted to ensure future generations would have a place to connect with animals and understand the importance of conservation. 

Their annual gifts support the Zoo’s conservation work today, while their legacy gift will help ensure that work continues for years to come. 

Cindy and Damon have spent their lives opening doors for others. Through their support, they are creating opportunities for generations of families to discover a sense of wonder for wildlife and the natural world, and to carry that sense into the future.
