Thiago Turns Two!

Meet Thiago…

Thiago is a maned wolf.

He just turned two-years-old…

So we had a little party for him!

He had a birthday sign, some behavioral enrichment and a special bloodsicle treat!

Recently, Thiago joined us from Abilene Zoo, and Jessie (a female) joined us from Fossil Rim Wildlife Center.

Guests can tell the maned wolf half-siblings apart by their tails. Thiago is missing part of his tail from an injury as a pup.

Described as a fox on stilts, a maned wolf isn’t really a fox…

Or a wolf…

Or a jackal…

Or a dog…

Or a coyote…

It is, however, the largest canid in South America!

Maned wolves range through central and eastern South America including northern Argentina, South and Central Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and southern Peru.

They are omnivorous eaters and primarily solitary hunters. They eat seasonally abundant fruits and vegetables, and small mammals such as rodents, rabbits and insects.

Check out Thiago and Jessie in their habitat just across from Monkey Village on your next visit to the Zoo!
