The Phoenix Zoo is excited to announce the birth of a female Masai giraffe! 12-year-old female, Sunshine, gave birth to the calf on November 16. The birth is the result of a Species Survival Program recommended pairing between Sunshine and 16-year-old male, Miguu. This is Sunshine’s fifth calf born at the Phoenix Zoo.

 

Until the calf is old enough to be introduced to the rest of the herd, the mother and daughter will remain in the giraffe barn and will not be visible. Sunshine has proven to be an excellent mother with her last four calves and we are excited to see her care for the newborn.
