Sinoceratops
Pronunciation: SIGH-noh-SEH-ruh-tops
Sinoceratops zhuchengensis
"Chinese horned face from Zhucheng"
Unlike its cousin Triceratops, Sinoceratops had only one horn on its snout and no protective horns over its eyes. However, it did have a huge six-foot skull that featured a massive frill adorned with decorative curved hornlets and bony nobs.
While the frill may have looked intimidating, it was most likely used as a display for attracting mates and intimidating rivals. It may also have been used to regulate body temperature by releasing heat as blood flowed through the frill’s thin tissues.
Where found: China
Geologic time frame: Late Cretaceous, 77 – 73 million years ago
Diet: herbivore
Habitat: wetlands, marshlands, floodplains, deserts
Length: 16 – 20 ft
