Dimetrodon may have looked like a dinosaur, but it lived many tens of millions of years before dinosaurs existed and was more closely related to the ancestors of modern mammals.

Its distinctive sail was likely used for courtship, intimidation and thermoregulation. Presumably, it would position the sail toward the sun to warm up and toward the wind to cool down.
