Doornbos Animal Rescue and Care Center

Building a New Holding and Quarantine Facility: The Doornbos Animal Rescue and Care Center

To be completed Fall 2026

The Doornbos Animal Rescue and Care Center (Doornbos ARCC) is a modern, 9,800-square-foot facility designed to support animals in their most vulnerable moments. More than doubling the Zoo’s current holding capacity, it will feature specialized spaces for quarantine, medical observation and recovery. Planned with input from veterinarians and staff, the Doornbos ARCC, alongside the new Veterinary Medical Center, will elevate animal health and welfare across the Zoo while expanding our capacity to assist partners, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and the Wildlife Trafficking Alliance, with urgent calls to help animals rescued from the wild or trafficking.

With your support, this vital center will create a calm, secure environment that reduces stress and supports safe transitions to habitats or partner institutions.

Quarantine is a designated period of time when an animal at the Zoo lives in a separate space. This practice is just one more tool to keep animals safe and healthy.

WHY DO ANIMALS UNDERGO QUARANTINE?
TRANSITION SUPPORT

To help the animal adjust to its new home and surroundings, or to help them get ready to leave for a new home.

HEALTH ASSESMENTS

Allows veterinarians to provide medical assessments to ensure the animal is healthy and free of disease.

RELATIONSHIP BUILDING

Allows keepers to build a relationship with new animals while learning to meet their nutritional, training and behavioral needs.

COLLECTION MANAGEMENT OR PLANNING

To accommodate breeding recommendations requiring short-term holding.

SAFETY MEASURES

To protect the wellbeing of animals at the Zoo by preventing the introduction of contagious diseases.

Our current quarantine and holding spaces are limited and outdated, and the needs of animals continue to grow. A new facility will:
