VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
As a conservation and education-focused institution, most of our volunteers concentrate on guest experiences.
Additional positions become available with the accrual of volunteer hours.
Engagement Station volunteers facilitate learning moments with our guests and provide animal and park information. You will have the opportunity to host a station that utilizes artifacts and activities to teach guests about the amazing animals in our care.
Candidates for this position are comfortable and confident with drawing in and engaging with Zoo guests of all ages. They are knowledgeable about the trails, event locations, general Zoo knowledge and wayfinding. This opportunity can be performed while seated in a shaded area.
Wild Side Gallery volunteers welcome our guests in to enjoy seasonal art installations, provide information and answer questions about the exhibitions, and ensure the safety of the artwork and visitors. You’ll have the opportunity to share your passion for art in a fun and engaging environment.
Candidates for this position are excited and comfortable with engaging zoo guests. They are happy in a slower paced indoor environment.
Events Only volunteers assist with various events throughout the year such as Spooky Safari, Dia del Nino and Earth Day. Positions include set-up, activity assistance, clean up and more. Shifts are typically 2-4 hours in length, with volunteer opportunities occurring 1-2 times a month, weather permitting.

Our Application Process
While we would love nothing more than to accept every individual that applies to our program, we are limited on the number of new volunteers we can accept each intake cycle. Acceptance into the program is competitive, and we encourage all prospective volunteers to thoroughly answer each question in the application to be considered for admission. Ready to get started? Follow the steps below!
We onboard new volunteers twice a year, and while we would love nothing more than to accept every individual that applies to our program, we are limited in the number of new volunteers we can accept each session. Acceptance into the program is competitive and we encourage all prospective volunteers to thoroughly answer each question in the application to be considered for admission. Please complete the Volunteer Interest Form to be notified of when the application opens next.

Once we review your application, we will reach out to schedule a 15-minute virtual interview. If selected as a volunteer, we will send over onboarding materials, including your background check.

If selected to continue based upon your interview responses and clearance of your background check, you will receive an invitation to Phoenix Zoo Volunteer Orientation. During orientation, you will learn more about the Zoo, confirm your chosen volunteer position and training schedule, and receive training on our customer service, safety, and general policies. To be considered for admission into the program, you must attend orientation.

Following orientation, all volunteers are required to complete 3 in-person training sessions as well as online learning modules. Some positions may also include an associated knowledge assessment that must be passed.
During this phase, volunteers are considered ‘training’ and do not yet receive the full benefits of volunteering.

Upon completion of all training requirements, volunteers are considered ‘active’ and are officially welcomed into the Phoenix Zoo Volunteer Program. Active volunteers receive all volunteer benefits, are provided with their official volunteer nametag, and are allowed to self-schedule for shifts.
