Whether rescued, transferred through species survival plan programs or adjusting to a new environment, those first days are important. Right now, several animals are experiencing this transition firsthand, including the Zoo’s Meishan pigs, who are currently in quarantine. These pigs are being carefully socialized by Zoo staff so that, once cleared, they can interact with guests along the Children’s Trail. That early relationship-building helps inspire empathy and connection, especially for young guests.
While the current quarantine space meets immediate needs, it is limited. The Doornbos Animal Rescue & Care Center will transform how animals like the Meishan pigs are welcomed, evaluated and cared for. Purpose-built spaces for recovery, health screenings and monitoring will allow animal care teams to support more rescues and transfers with the highest standards of care.
